Georgie anxious to calm

"He was so calm yesterday. We did what you recommended and when we left the house, we got just 1 bark and that was it. In disbelief."
— Georgie's owner

THE PROBLEM

You've started moving quietly around your own home.

Picking your keys up gently.

Putting your shoes on in another room.

Doing that strange little pretend-leaving routine somebody on the internet swore would help, while your dog clocks every second of it anyway.

Maybe you've come home to the damage. Or the neighbour's message. Or the video you couldn't bring yourself to finish watching.

And it's changed things, hasn't it. You've turned down invitations. Cut trips short. Done the sums in the car park about how long you've been gone. Said no to something you wanted, because it wasn't worth what it would cost them.

You love this dog enormously. That's exactly why it's so hard.

THE PART NOBODY TELLS YOU

Here's what I've noticed in almost every separation anxiety case I've worked with.

By the time someone comes to me, there are two anxious nervous systems in the house. Not one.

Your dog panics when you leave. So you brace before you go. You watch them for signs. You leave with your own heart already going, and your dog — who reads you more closely than anyone alive ever has — feels every bit of it and concludes that yes, something about this really is worth panicking over.

Then you come home to the evidence, and it confirms everything for both of you. And around it goes.

I want to be really clear about this, because it gets said badly and it gets said cruelly: you did not cause this. You're not making your dog anxious by being anxious. You've been carrying something genuinely heavy, for a long time, mostly on your own.

But you are in the loop with them. And that's actually good news — because it means there are two places to work, and one of them is entirely within your reach.

That's what this guide is about.

WHAT IS IT?

A warm, plain-English guide to what's really happening in your dog's nervous system when you leave — and in yours.

It's built in three steps: Safety & Security, Environment, and Emotional Wellness.

Together they create the conditions a dog actually needs in order to settle, rather than asking them to behave as though they already have.

WHAT'S INSIDE

First — which one is it? Separation anxiety, isolation distress, confinement distress and boredom look almost identical from the outside and need completely different approaches. You'll learn to tell them apart before you start, so you're not spending months working on the wrong thing.

The honest conversation about being left Why the absences between your practice sessions matter more than the practice itself, what to do about them, and what to do when your circumstances make that impossible.

A gentle, step-by-step approach to departures

How to leave and return in a way that settles your dog instead of winding them up — and how to let your dog set the pace rather than a calendar.

The Decompression Zone

How to build one space in your home where your dog's nervous system can properly come down, and the rule that makes it work.

Resting, or waiting?

The difference between a dog who has genuinely let go and a dog lying down but still on duty. Most people have only ever seen the second one.

The invisible stressors

The chemical load in your home — cleaners, plug-ins, fragrances — that most owners never think about, and four swaps you can make this week.

Tone and your voice

Why how you speak to your dog changes their physiology, not just their mood.

The Owner Regulation Practice

The chapter most guides don't have. Five minutes a day — morning, pre-walk, evening — to settle your own nervous system, because yours is your dog's reference point. Including a 90-second reset for the moments when you're the one who's come undone.

The Regulation Scale

A simple way to measure progress, so you can see movement on the weeks when it feels like nothing is changing.

Your 7-Day Reset

One small thing a day for a week. No overwhelm, no trying to do everything at once.

WHO IT'S FOR

  • Anyone whose dog can't be left — whether that's eight hours or eight minutes

  • Anyone who's tried the desensitisation protocols and found they worked on paper and not in life

  • Anyone living with a dog who never seems to properly switch off, even when you're home

  • Anyone who dreads the doorbell, or has quietly stopped having people over

  • Anyone whose dog's anxiety shows up somewhere else entirely — the guide covers the nervous system, not just the front door

AND WHO IT'S PROBABLY NOT FOR

  • Anyone after obedience exercises or departure drills — there genuinely aren't any in here

  • Anyone hoping for a quick fix. This is understanding, and understanding takes a little time. It's worth it.

MY PROMISE TO YOU

Read it. If it doesn't change the way you look at your dog — and at your own part in all of this — send me an email within 30 days and I'll refund you. Please keep the guide anyway.

WHO I AM

Hi, I'm Ciara, founder of The Calm Dog Method™. I hold an Advanced Diploma in Animal Science and Behaviour, I'm a Reiki Master with intuitive and animal communication training, and I've been working with anxious dogs and their people this way since 2021.

Separation anxiety is the thing I see most, and the thing I love working with most — because it responds. Once you understand what your dog is holding and what part of it belongs to you, things move.

This guide is the foundation everything else I do is built on, and it's where I'd love you to start.

FAQ

My dog's anxiety isn't really about being left. Is this still for me?

Very likely, yes. Separation anxiety is where it shows up most visibly, but the guide is about the nervous system underneath — the dog who can't settle, who's always half on duty, who comes undone when someone arrives. If any of that is your dog, you'll find them in here.

I've already tried desensitisation and gradual departures. Then you're in exactly the right place. Those approaches work on what your dog does. This one works on what your dog feels, which is usually why the drills plateau.

Are you saying my anxiety caused this? No — and I'd never say that to you. You didn't cause it. You're in a loop with your dog, which is a completely different thing, and it's the reason there's something useful you can do. Working on your own nervous system isn't penance. It's the fastest lever you have.

Does this replace my vet? No. The guide is clear about when to involve them, and for dogs in real distress, veterinary support alongside this work isn't a last resort — it's often what makes the work possible.

What format is it? A downloadable PDF for your phone, tablet or laptop — or print it out, if you're a highlighter sort of person.

Do I need any experience? None at all. It's written for someone who's never thought about their dog this way before.

How long is it? Short enough to read in an evening, detailed enough that you'll come back to it for years.

You've been carrying this for both of you.

Let's start by understanding what your dog is actually asking for.
